What counts as a Outlying Fell

The fells covered in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland (1974), Wainwright's single-volume companion to the Pictorial Guides. They ring the National Park and are generally lower and gentler than the 214.

Wainwright wrote the Outlying Fells explicitly for walkers past their hill-climbing prime, which is why the book favours shorter days on the fringe of the district. As a bagging list it is far less walked than the 214 — and several of its tops see almost no traffic at all.

OpenFell holds every GB member of this list. Heights, drops and grid references are the surveyed figures from the Database of British & Irish Hills, not the round numbers printed in older guidebooks — so a hill occasionally sits a metre either side of where you expect it.
