Latterbarrow stands east of Hawkshead at 244 metres and is one of the fells covered in Wainwright's The Outlying Fells of Lakeland.

The name is thought to be Old Norse: látr, a lair or animal shelter, combined with berg, a hill, suggesting ground where livestock or wild animals lay up.
