About Dunnerdale Fells

Dunnerdale Fells form an area of upland between Ulpha and Broughton Mills. Wainwright's chapter in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland begins on a minor road on the western side of the fells, in the valley of the River Duddon, and climbs to a cairned top at 280 m before retracing part of the way and adding a small anticlockwise loop.

What caught his interest was not the summit but the ground itself, and in particular what he called a remarkable profusion of ancient cairns.
