About Howes

Howes is not an independent hill but a subsidiary top on the broad eastern flank of Branstree, lying south-east of Selside Pike. Wainwright gave it a chapter in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland while being blunt about its merits, calling it undistinguished and saying there was nothing exciting about it.

What he did praise lay around it rather than on it: the sight of Mosedale quarry, and the waterfalls at Swindale Head, which he rated up to Lodore standard. His anticlockwise circuit begins at Swindale Head, follows Swindale Beck, crosses Nabs Moor at 492 metres to reach the 590-metre summit, then drops to Mosedale Beck.
