About Walna Scar

Walna Scar lies just south of the pass of the same name in the Coniston Hills, and its 620 m summit stands only a little above that pass. It is the highest of Wainwright's Outlying Fells of Lakeland; his account continues past the main top to a second summit at White Maiden.

The Walna Scar Road, now a restricted byway, was an old packhorse route that Wainwright called the ancient highway over Walna Scar. It carried the wool trade between Furness Abbey and Coniston in the medieval period, and may have been in use as far back as the Bronze Age.

Geologically the fell holds a rich seam of distinctively striped slate, quarried here until the early twentieth century.

Walna Scar is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to The Old Man of Coniston (802 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 605 m.
