About Faulds Brow

Faulds Brow is a low swell of ground northwest of Caldbeck, and at 344 m its summit stands only a little proud of the land around it. A major road runs just to the south, so the top is a matter of minutes from tarmac. Wainwright gave it a chapter in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland and, to make something of the day, recommended an anticlockwise circuit from Caldbeck largely along minor roads.

Heather covers most of the fell and a small disused quarry lies just east of the top. The views run to High Pike southwards and north across the Solway Firth into Scotland, with two broadcasting masts prominent in that direction; they stand outside the national park, whose boundary runs just north of the hill.

The recorded summit point is no feature: ground 15m NW of cairn. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Faulds Brow is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Knott (710 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 320 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
