About School Knott

School Knott rises east of Windermere town to about 230 metres, its top a rocky outcrop with no trig point and, as Wainwright noted, no cairn either. Four separate stretches of Windermere can be picked out from it, and Schoolknott Tarn lies just to the south-east.

Wainwright's chapter in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland begins at Windermere railway station and takes in Grandsire at 249 metres and an unnamed top of 246 metres along the way.

Which hill this one belongs to

School Knott is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to High Street (829 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 201 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
