About Newton Fell South

Newton Fell, northeast of the A590 near High Newton and southeast of Newby Bridge, has two tops, and this is the southern one — the summit Wainwright called Newton Fell (south), otherwise Dixon Heights. Its northern counterpart is the higher of the pair at around 240 m.

The fell forms one chapter of The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, in which Wainwright sets out a separate walk to each top. Neither summit is reached by a public right of way; he noted that both walks depend on the goodwill of owners and tenants.

The recorded summit point is slight rocky/grassy rise 4m from ruined tower. On broad or flat summits the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Newton Fell South is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Gummer's How (321 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 139 m.
