About Hugill Fell (Wainwright summit)

The name Hugill Fell covers two separate tops on the western flank of the Kentmere valley near Staveley. The Database of British and Irish Hills lists the higher at 273 metres as a TuMP, and this one, at 265 metres, as the Wainwright summit. It also goes by Black Crag.

Wainwright gave the fell a chapter in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, ascending from Staveley and returning the same way, and recorded a cairn on top. Gates have since been put through the high drystone walls and a clear path now joins the two summits; a circular version taking in Hugill Fell and descending by Reston Scar is the alternative that has been suggested.
