High Knott

About High Knott

High Knott, near Staveley, appears on some Ordnance Survey maps as Williamson's Monument, after the structure on its 275 m summit. The Reverend T. Williamson raised it in 1803 in memory of his father Thomas, who is said to have climbed the fell every day before breakfast.

Wainwright's chapter in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland starts near the 17th-century Ulthwaite Bridge on the River Kent, takes in High Knott and then makes a clockwise circuit past the early British village site at Hugill and over what he called the pleasant heights on the west side of mid-Kentmere. As of May 2016 the landowner forbids access to the summit.
