About St. John's Hill

St John's Hill is the northern top of Caer Mote, the 289 m hill near Bothel at the northern edge of the Lake District. At 285 m it is the first summit reached on Wainwright's round, which climbs from Bothel to St John's Hill, carries on south to the main top and then swings south-east to a minor road by the Roman fort for an anticlockwise return.

An earthwork enclosure of undetermined age known as The Battery sits on this northern top. Below the hill to the south-east are traces of a 1st-century Roman fort, and the main summit, just outside the national park boundary, looks out over Bassenthwaite Lake.
