About Gummer's How

Standing above the eastern shore of Windermere towards its southern end, Gummer's How is the highest of the foothills in this part of the Lake District at 321 m. The name uses how, from the Old Norse haugr, a common local word for a hill or mound. The view runs the length of Windermere and reaches the Coniston fells, the central fells and the sweep of Morecambe Bay. A trig pillar marks the top.

Most walkers set out from the road at Astley's Plantation car park, itself above 200 m and only about 700 metres from the summit. The lower ground is forested and the upper part moorland, with rowan, bracken and heather, short steep pitches and rock to work around. Wainwright covered it in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland.
