About Finsthwaite Heights

Finsthwaite Heights is less a single summit than a stretch of upland above the village of Finsthwaite, and Wainwright was blunt about it in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland: the surroundings are delightful, he wrote, but this is not fellwalking.

His route begins at Newby Bridge and climbs through woodland past a tower inscribed in 1799 in commemoration of the Royal Navy, then goes on through the village to Low Dam and High Dam. Both tarns are artificial, built to supply power to Stott Park Bobbin Mill.
