About Caermote Hill

Caer Mote, 289 m, stands near Bothel in the northern Lake District, its summit just outside the national park boundary and looking over Bassenthwaite Lake. Wainwright covered it as Caermote Hill in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, describing an anticlockwise round from Bothel that takes in the northern top of St John's Hill at 285 m, continues south to the main summit, then heads south-east to a minor road by the Roman fort.

There is history on the ground here: an earthwork enclosure of undetermined age called The Battery occupies the northern top, and traces of a 1st-century Roman fort survive below the hill to the south-east. Wainwright's original book gave the height as 920 feet; Chris Jesty corrected this to 948 feet in the 2011 second edition.
