About Scout Scar (Wainwright summit)

Scout Scar, also called Underbarrow Scar, runs west of Kendal above the village of Underbarrow. Its highest point is 235 metres, with 109 metres of prominence, making it a HuMP; Wainwright's chapter in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland instead describes a lower top at 233 metres, some 270 metres to the south. His anticlockwise round also crosses Cunswick Scar at 207 metres.

Both scars are Carboniferous Limestone, tilted so that the ground dips gently eastwards and breaks into a steep scarp on the western side.

On the lower southern summit stands a shelter known locally as The Mushroom, built in 1912 as a memorial to King George V and restored in 1969 and again in 2003.
