About Newton Fell North

Newton Fell lies north-east of the A590 near High Newton, south-east of Newby Bridge, and Wainwright split it into two tops in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. The northern summit, around 240 metres, is the higher; the southern one, Dixon Heights, reaches about 178 metres.

He set out separate walks to each. Neither summit has a public right of way to it, and Wainwright was explicit that both should be attempted only by courtesy of the owners and tenants.

Finding the summit

The recorded summit point is ground S of wall near radio mast. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Classification history: highest point of fell is hill 19191. White Stone SD390848 is also mentioned by Wainwright but is considerably lower. Note that in the latest edition of the Outlying Fells revised by Chris Jesty a new route to the summit is described.

Newton Fell North is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Gummer's How (321 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 237 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
