Four nations, four different laws
Where you stand in the UK decides what you may do there. Scotland has a statutory right of responsible access; England and Wales limit roaming to mapped open access land; Northern Ireland has no general right at all. Pick a nation for the full picture.
Scotland
Statutory right of responsible access to most land and inland water. Wild camping is broadly lawful under the 2003 Act.
England
Right to roam only on mapped CRoW open access land. Permission needed — except on the Dartmoor commons.
Wales
Right to roam only on mapped CRoW open access land. Permission needed everywhere.
Northern Ireland
No general right to roam. Permission needed everywhere.
The law moves: in May 2025 the Supreme Court confirmed a public right to backpack camp on the Dartmoor commons (Darwall v Dartmoor NPA) — wild-camping law, nation by nation. These summaries are general information, not legal advice; local restrictions and byelaws can override them.
