Know where you can walk, camp and roam

OpenFell answers the questions that decide a UK hill day — am I allowed here, how long will it take, will I beat the dark — with data for 1,740 summits and the access law of all four UK nations.

Four nations, four different laws

Where you stand in the UK decides what you may do there. Scotland has a statutory right of responsible access; England and Wales limit roaming to mapped open access land; Northern Ireland has no general right at all. Pick a nation for the full picture.

The law moves: in May 2025 the Supreme Court confirmed a public right to backpack camp on the Dartmoor commons (Darwall v Dartmoor NPA) — wild-camping law, nation by nation. These summaries are general information, not legal advice; local restrictions and byelaws can override them.

Plan the day

Free tools that answer the planning questions a route summary can't — computed for your route, your date and your location, entirely in your browser.

All results are planning estimates, not judgements that a route is safe — read our safety notes before heading out.

Every long-distance path in the country

360 waymarked long-distance routes across all four nations — 41,913 km of path. Each one measured from its own route line rather than copied from a leaflet, split into day stages, and carrying the access rules that apply along it.
