Burney stands north of the A5092 between Greenodd and Broughton-in-Furness, reaching 298 m with a trig point at the top. It also goes by Great Burney, distinguishing it from Little Burney, a slight rise along the north ridge.

Wainwright gave the hill a chapter in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland.
