About Staveley Fell

Staveley Fell rises east of the southern end of Windermere, above Staveley-in-Cartmel, from which it takes its name. This is not the better-known Staveley in Westmorland. Wainwright admitted the fell has no name of its own, even locally: Ordnance maps label the ground Astley's and Chapel House Plantations, forestry that was pressing in on the open fell when he wrote.

He still gave it a chapter in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, praising the aerial view over the foot of Windermere and describing a clockwise loop from Staveley-in-Cartmel. Chris Jesty's revised edition offers a different line, noting how many walkers, following the map or the original book, had been stopped by an uncrossable fence.

Staveley Fell is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Gummer's How (321 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 223 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
