About Knipescar Common

Knipescar Common, also called Knipe Scar, is a stretch of upland above the River Lowther near Bampton in the eastern Lake District. Wainwright, who devoted a chapter of The Outlying Fells of Lakeland to it, called the summit indefinite, though it reaches 341 m. Limestone outcrops break the surface, and an ancient enclosure lies on the common.

Two ring cairns here are scheduled monuments, the more northerly being the enclosure Wainwright described. He praised the outlook, which takes in Blencathra to the north and an unbroken skyline of the higher Pennines. Shap Beck Quarry, a working limestone quarry, lies immediately east of the common's southern part.
