About Allt-fawr

Allt-fawr belongs to the Moelwynion and sits on the internal boundary of the national park, looking down on Blaenau Ffestiniog and its slate quarries, on Llyn Ystradau and on Ffestiniog Power Station at Tanygrisiau.

Slate defines the hill inside as well as out. Oakeley Quarry, the world's largest underground slate mine, lies on the northern slope, and the large Cwmorthin Quarry on the southern. The two are connected beneath the summit, and collapsed workings have left chambering and adits showing at the surface. From 1974 to 1997 the Gloddfa Ganol tourist attraction ran within Oakeley Quarry on the south side.
