About Cnicht North Top

Cnicht North Top is exactly what the name suggests: a rise on the north ridge of Cnicht, in the Moelwynion range of Snowdonia. Many walkers pass it by on their way towards Ysgafell Wen, Moel Druman and Allt-fawr.

It qualifies as a Nuttall, the list of 443 hills in England and Wales above 610 m with at least 15 m of relative height, compiled by John and Anne Nuttall and published in 1993 as the two-volume The Mountains of England & Wales.

Which hill this one belongs to

Cnicht North Top is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Allt-fawr (698 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 671 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
