About Moel Eilio

Moel Eilio stands about three miles north-west of Snowdon and carries two subsidiary tops, Foel Gron and Foel Goch. Its slopes are relatively flat and grassy, which helps snow accumulate in quantity during winter; the average annual temperature on the mountain is around 6 C.

Together with Foel Gron, Foel Goch and Moel Cynghorion, the hill forms a curved ridge running generally south-west towards Snowdon, giving a less frequented line onto that mountain. A common ascent begins at Llanberis by way of Bwlch y Groes and the north ridge. The small lake of Llyn Dwythwch lies below the summit.

The Moel Eilio group

One other listed summit sits in the same prominence group, with Moel Eilio as the independent hill at its head.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
