About Mynydd Mawr

Mynydd Mawr — 'big mountain' in Welsh — stands roughly 7 km west of Snowdon above Llyn Cwellyn, the northern outlier of the Moel Hebog group. Seen from the north its profile is often likened to a lying elephant, which has earned it the nickname Yr Eliffant, or Elephant Mountain.

Ancient settlement remains and field systems survive on the western flank. A popular ascent begins at Rhyd Ddu. From the top the view runs west to the Llŷn Peninsula and Caernarfon Bay, north-west to Anglesey, north to Moel Eilio and east to Moel Hebog and Snowdon; on exceptionally clear days the Wicklow Mountains show across the Irish Sea.
