About Glyder Fach

Glyder Fach is the second highest of the Glyderau and the sixth highest summit in Wales, at 994.3 m. Its ridge is approached from Tryfan and Bristly Ridge to the north, over Glyder Fawr from Pen-y-Pass to the south, or along the Glyder ridge running east towards Capel Curig, and it draws a steady stream of climbers.

Two rock features stand out. Y Gwyliwr, near the summit, is a large block that from the right angle looks precariously perched, and is much photographed. To the west lies Castell y Gwynt, a spiky outcrop. Sir Ifor Williams traced the name Glyder to the Welsh gludair, a heap of stones — apt for the ground here.

Finding the summit

The recorded summit point is large rock on huge pile of rocks. On broad or flat summits the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Glyder Fach is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Glyder Fawr (1,001 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 920 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
