About Fan Brycheiniog - Twr y Fan Foel

Fan Brycheiniog is the high point of the Black Mountain (Y Mynydd Du) area of the Bannau Brycheiniog national park, at 802.5 metres. A trig point stands at the summit on the edge of the escarpment, with a stone shelter and inner seat nearby.

The mountain sits just inside the historic county of Brecknockshire, now within Powys, which is the source of its Welsh name. Less than a kilometre north-west along the ridge, the subsidiary top of Fan Foel is the county top of Carmarthenshire.

It falls within the Fforest Fawr Geopark, designated in 2005 for the area's geological heritage. In clear conditions the moorland and open country to the north show how isolated this range is compared with the busier Pen y Fan group to the east.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

cairn is 0.75m higher than knoll by trig point 290m SSW (hill 2230) at SN 82537 21798.

The recorded summit point is cairn. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

6 other listed summits sit in the same prominence group, with Fan Brycheiniog - Twr y Fan Foel as the independent hill at its head.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
