About Fan Hir

Fan Hir closes the eastern end of the Black Mountain, Y Mynydd Du, within Bannau Brycheiniog. It is a subsidiary summit of Fan Brycheiniog and falls within Powys, in the traditional area of Fforest Fawr.

The Welsh name means 'long peak', and the description holds: the escarpment runs roughly 4 km, facing east, and its steep eastern face is best appreciated from that side. A col called Bwlch Giedd separates Fan Hir from Fan Brycheiniog (802 m) to the north-west, where a path climbs by a stone staircase from Llyn y Fan Fawr. Streams draining east and north from the hill feed the River Tawe.
