About Clough Head

Clough Head marks the northern end of the main Helvellyn ridge and is commonly walked as part of that traverse. It stands south of Threlkeld and the A66, and forms the steep eastern wall of the quiet valley of St John's in the Vale.

The two flanks are quite unalike: the western side shows a dark mass of rocky crags and a deep-set ravine, while the other side is smooth grass. The name comes from the clough, the steep valley below the north face. Beneath that same face is the lower granite hill of Threlkeld Knotts, much quarried around its margins, and a number of rock types formed in very different circumstances occur on and around the fell.

The summit reaches 726 m and carries Wainwright, Hewitt, Nuttall, HuMP and Simm status.
