About Green Side

Green Side, also recorded as White Stones, takes its name from the Greenside lead mine below it in the eastern Lake District. Between 1825 and 1961 that mine worked around two million tons of ore, yielding roughly 159,000 tonnes of lead and 45 tonnes of silver, and in the 1940s it was Britain's largest producer of lead ore.

Its documentary record is unusually complete for a 19th-century British metal mine, running back to 1825. An earlier working probably began in the second half of the 1700s and had shut by 1819; the Greenside Mining Company reopened it in 1825 and profited until lead prices fell after 1880. Where many rivals closed, the company cut costs and kept going until 1935.
