About Hart Side

Hart Side is not a separate mountain in the strict sense but a subsidiary top on one of the eastern ridges of Stybarrow Dodd, on the main Helvellyn ridge west of Ullswater in the Eastern Fells. Above the col dividing it from Green Side it rises only about 23 m, though some guidebook writers have nonetheless given it a chapter of its own, often treating the lower Watermillock Common as belonging to the same fell. Others have preferred simply to describe routes linking the many tops here.

The ridge running between Hart Side and Green Side is built of andesite, laid down as a sequence of lava flows from ancient volcanoes. At the Green Side end, a lead vein fed what became the most productive lead mine in the Lake District, working until 1962. The name itself refers to a hillside frequented by harts.

Hart Side is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Helvellyn (950 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 732 m.

Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
