Set between Patterdale and Ambleside, Red Screes can be counted as an outlier of the Fairfield group in the Eastern Fells, though low cols cut it off from its neighbours.

That separation gives the fell a marked independence, reflected in its prominence — enough for Marilyn status alongside its Wainwright, Hewitt and Nuttall listings.
