About Pen Llithrig y Wrach

Pen Llithrig y Wrach carries one of the more memorable names in the British hills, rendered as the slippery peak of the witch. The explanation may lie in boggy ground underfoot, or in the summit's pointed profile recalling a witch's hat.

An outlier of the Carneddau, it is one of four Marilyns in that range. Creigiau Gleision, another Marilyn, lies east; Pen yr Helgi Du and Carnedd Llewelyn lie west, and the higher Carneddau summits are reached that way. The eastern flank drops sharply to Llyn Cowlyd. Craig Eigiau and Llyn Eigiau fill the view north, with Gallt yr Ogof, Glyder Fach and Tryfan to the south. Approaches come from Capel Curig or the A5 in the south, or from Dolgarrog and Tal-y-bont in the Conwy valley.
