About Cefn Cyfarwydd

Cefn Cyfarwydd is a ridge in the county borough of Conwy in north Wales, rising above the village of Trefriw on the west side of the Conwy valley. It forms a dramatic dividing line between Cwm Cowlyd and the rugged Carneddau mountains on one side and the greener, lusher Conwy valley on the other.

In Welsh, cefn means 'ridge', while cyfarwydd can mean either 'familiar' or 'a story-teller, guide or expert' — so the name can be read as either 'familiar ridge' or 'story-teller's ridge'.

Which hill this one belongs to

Cefn Cyfarwydd is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Creigiau Gleision (676 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 471 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
