About Nine Standards Rigg

Nine Standards Rigg is the summit of Hartley Fell, a few miles south-east of Kirkby Stephen and roughly 700 m outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park, within the North Pennines AONB and near the Cumbria-North Yorkshire boundary. Alan Dawson's The Hewitts and Marilyns of England lists the fell under this name rather than as Hartley Fell.

The name comes from the Nine Standards, a group of cairns standing at 650 m just north of the summit, some originally over four metres high. Their purpose is uncertain, though they may have marked the boundary between Westmorland and Swaledale. They sit on the watershed between the Eden headwaters draining to Scandal Beck in the north-west and Whitsundale Beck feeding the Swale to the south-east. The Coast to Coast Walk between Kirkby Stephen and Keld passes them.

Finding the summit

The recorded summit point is no feature: ground 20m SE of trig point. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.
