About Hugh Seat

Hugh Seat sits on the Cumbria/North Yorkshire boundary in Mallerstang, rising above Black Fell Moss, a wide expanse of peat bog. Red Gill Beck drains it and is the source of the River Eden; the Ure and the Swale also rise within a kilometre, which has earned the area the label watershed of England. Its prominence is modest given the neighbouring high points, but it stands out clearly above the Eden's source.

The fell was formerly known as Hugh Seat Morvill, or Morvil Hill. Near the top stands a column of cut stones called Lady's Pillar, on which the inscription AP1664 is still faintly legible, for Anne Pembroke, the married name of Lady Anne Clifford. She raised it in 1664 in memory of Sir Hugh de Morville, her predecessor as Lord of the Manor of Mallerstang.
