Great Knoutberry Hill, often called Widdale Fell, sits near Dent at the heads of Ribblesdale, Dentdale and Wensleydale. It is a meeting point of boundaries: the old West Riding and North Riding of Yorkshire converge at the summit, and the modern Cumbria–North Yorkshire line also crosses the fell.

At 2,205 feet it is the 16th-highest fell in the Yorkshire Dales, tied exactly with Rogan's Seat. The hill is visible from the long road section of the Dales Way between Ribblesdale and Dent Head, and a common approach leaves that path at Stonehouse Farm to follow the Arten Gill path up Dent Fell towards Widdale. Views centre on the Yorkshire Three Peaks, with Wild Boar Fell and the Lakeland fells to the north.

The recorded summit point is ground within apex of fence and wall near wind shelter and trig point. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.
