About Redshaw Moss

Redshaw Moss, also known as Snaizeholme Fell, is a 545-metre hill in the Yorkshire Dales National Park in North Yorkshire. It shares its name with Snaizeholme, a small side valley of Wensleydale noted for a tree re-wilding project and for its red squirrel reserve, the only place in the North Yorkshire part of the national park with a known red squirrel population.

The upper slopes of Snaizeholme, along with Ribblehead further to the west, rank among the wettest places in the national park: mean rainfall recorded on Snaizeholme Fell is around 1,957 millimetres (77 inches) a year.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

ground at 544m spot height 650m NW at SD 81680 85160 and ground 460m NNW at SD 81517 85037 are both lower.

The recorded summit point is small pile of stones. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Redshaw Moss is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Dodd Fell Hill (668 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 505 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
