About Blea Moor

Blea Moor is a 535-metre hill in the Central Pennines of North Yorkshire, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It shares its name with Blea Moor Tunnel, a railway tunnel of about a mile and a half between Ribblehead Viaduct and Dent railway station — the longest tunnel on the Settle–Carlisle line, at almost twice the length of the next longest, Rise Hill Tunnel.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

ground by thick fence post 110m NE at SD 77327 82669 is as high.

The recorded summit point is trig point. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Blea Moor is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Whernside (737 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 423 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
