About Great End

Great End closes the northern end of the Scafell chain, and its two aspects could hardly differ more. Approached from the south it is little more than a rise continuing the ridge; from the north it presents an imposing face above Sprinkling Tarn.

That north face draws climbers, and the ground around the tarn is a popular wild camping spot. Alfred Wainwright singled the fell out in his Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells as the kind of terrain that calls the fellwalker back, contrasting its magnificence with the prettier corners of the district.

Great End is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Scafell Pike (978 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 853 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
