Ill Crag ranks fourth among English summits, behind Scafell Pike, Sca Fell and Helvellyn. It looks out over Eskdale, with a long view across to Bowfell and Crinkle Crags.

Part of the high Scafell ground in the central Lake District, it is listed as a Hewitt, Nuttall, Simm, Furth, Birkett and Synge at around 931 metres.
