About Gragareth

Gragareth straddles the Lancashire and North Yorkshire boundary, its 627 m top lying about 200 m west of the county line and inside the 2016 Yorkshire Dales National Park border. It is the second-highest point in post-1974 Lancashire, one metre below Green Hill some 3.2 km north; the traditional county's high point was the Old Man of Coniston at 803 m.

Leck Fell forms the western slopes and Ireby Fell the southern. The trig point looks out over Morecambe Bay, the Lake District fells, the Howgills, Ingleborough and the Forest of Bowland. The boundary wall along the ridge is reckoned to be among the highest dry stone walls in the country, and the Three Men of Gragareth, a set of tall cairns, stand on the western flank above Leck Fell House. The hill was formerly known as Greygarth Fell.

The recorded summit point is small cairn 100m E of trig point. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Gragareth is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Great Coum (686 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 595 m.

Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
