About Elidir Fawr
Elidir Fawr closes the northern end of the Glyderau. The name means Big Elidir, after a legendary 6th-century warrior king also called Eliffer Gosgorddfawr, Elidir of the Great Army.
Marchlyn Mawr, the small lake to the north of the summit, serves as the upper reservoir of Dinorwig power station, a pumped-storage scheme built inside the mountain; water runs from it through large tunnels down to Llyn Peris. Seen from the north the mountain is conspicuous enough that it can look taller than the higher peaks beyond. Elidir Fach, 795 metres, lies just west.

The Elidir Fawr group
3 other listed summits sit in the same prominence group, with Elidir Fawr as the independent hill at its head.
| Summit | Height | Drop |
|---|---|---|
| Carnedd y Filiast | 821 m | 76 m |
| Mynydd Perfedd | 813 m | 20 m |
| Carnedd y Filiast North Top | 720 m | 16 m |
Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
