About Carnedd y Filiast

Carnedd y Filiast is the most northerly summit of the Glyderau, taking in its top Y Fronllwyd at 720 m. The summit itself is very rocky and carries several cairns.

Its crags present a huge expanse of layered slab, which yields some remarkably long and continuous climbing lines, over 1,000 feet in places. Many of these routes are noted for offering almost no protection and for their complete isolation.

The view takes in Anglesey, Snowdon, the Carneddau and the rest of the Glyderau, plus Tryfan, Foel Goch, Y Garn, Elidir Fawr and Marchlyn Mawr reservoir; on exceptionally clear days the Isle of Man and the Wicklow Mountains are visible. Mean annual temperature here is estimated at around 4 Celsius, and the peak ranks about 25th highest in Snowdonia.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

cairn is probably higher than windshelter 35m N at SH 62045 62775.

The recorded summit point is small cairn. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Carnedd y Filiast is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Elidir Fawr (924 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 745 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
