About Cribin Fawr

Cribin Fawr lies roughly four miles south-west of Aran Fawddwy, among the Dyfi hills — a subgroup of the Cadair Idris group within Snowdonia. It is reckoned a top of Maesglase, linked to that parent by the Craig Portas ridge.

The summit itself is a wide plateau of peat bog rather than a defined point. Waun-oer stands to the west, Cadair Idris to the north, Maesglase to the south and Glasgwm to the east.

Which hill this one belongs to

Cribin Fawr is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Maesglase (679 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 566 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
