About Craig Portas East Top

Craig Portas East Top, known as Mynydd Gartheiniog, is a mountain in southern Eryri (Snowdonia), Gwynedd, and one of the Dyfi hills. It forms a long ridge running south from the cliff of Craig Portas above Dinas Mawddwy, parallel to Mynydd Dolgoed, which lies to the west.

On its eastern flank sits the Gartheiniog slate quarry, which was once served by the Hendre-Ddu Tramway.

Which hill this one belongs to

Craig Portas East Top is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Maesglase (679 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 553 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
