About Craig Portas

Craig Portas, also called Mynydd Dolgoed, is a mountain in southern Eryri (Snowdonia), Gwynedd, and one of the Dyfi hills. It takes the form of a long ridge, running north-east from low ground between the valleys of the Afon Angell and the Nant Ceiswyn to the cliff of Craig Portas above Dinas Mawddwy.

Its neighbours include Mynydd Hendre-ddu, the next mountain along the ridge to the south-east, with Mynydd Llwydiarth and Mynydd Cymerau lying to the south.

Which hill this one belongs to

Craig Portas is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Maesglase (679 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 550 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
