About Y Lliwedd

Y Lliwedd is linked to Snowdon, and its eastern side falls away in steep cliffs above Llyn Llydaw and Glaslyn. For anyone coming up by the Miners' or Pyg tracks it is the peak that dominates the view, and walkers on the Snowdon Horseshoe cross it as part of the round.

The mountain has a long climbing history. George Mallory served much of his early apprenticeship on these rocks, the north face was being explored by the close of the 19th century, and in 1909 it became the subject of Britain's first climbing guidebook, The Climbs on Lliwedd. The 1953 British Everest Expedition also trained here in some quantity.

The Y Lliwedd group

3 other listed summits sit in the same prominence group, with Y Lliwedd as the independent hill at its head.

Y Lliwedd East Top 893 m 20 m
Lliwedd Bach 819 m 21 m

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
