About Gallt y Wenallt

Gallt y Wenallt closes the north ridge of Y Lliwedd, and is the summit that completes the Snowdon Horseshoe for anyone doing the full round. The top is grassy with a small cairn, at 620 m.

Its northern face is said to be the longest slope in Snowdonia, dropping close to 2,000 ft. In clear conditions the view down to Llyn Gwynant is rated among the finest in the area. The hill is the resting place of the oil man and sailor Emrys Nye Hughes.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

ground 120m WNW at SH 64140 53329 is 1.4m lower.

The recorded summit point is rock 2m NW of cairn. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Gallt y Wenallt is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Y Lliwedd (898 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 597 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
