About Y Llethr

Y Llethr is the highest mountain of the Rhinogydd in north Wales. The top is flat and grassy with only a small cairn, which suits the character of the southern flanks rather more than the rugged ground on the northern approach.

Diffwys lies to the south and Y Garn to the south-east, with Rhinog Fach to the north and the hill of Moelfre to the west. Approaches from the west start in Cwm Nantcol, either directly or by way of Bwlch Drws Ardudwy and over Rhinog Fach.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

summit is 25m S of cairn.

The recorded summit point is ground near slight bend in wall. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

The Y Llethr group

3 other listed summits sit in the same prominence group, with Y Llethr as the independent hill at its head.

Listed summits in the Y Llethr prominence group
SummitHeightDrop
Diffwys 750 m 148 m
Crib-y-rhiw 681 m 29 m
Diffwys West Top 643 m 22 m

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
