About Rhinog Fawr

Rhinog Fawr stands in the Rhinogydd of southern Eryri, the third highest summit of that range behind Y Llethr and Diffwys. Rhinog Fach lies to the south across the pass of Bwlch Drws Ardudwy, and Moel Ysgyfarnogod to the north.

As across most of the Rhinogydd, the ground is hard sedimentary rock smothered in heather, which slows walking considerably. Llyn Du, a small tarn set among crags at around 510 m, sits below the summit. The Roman Steps pass gives the usual line of approach from the north-east or north-west.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

rock by trig point 25m W at SH 65675 29012 is 1m lower; rock 5m S of cairn is 10cm lower.

The recorded summit point is rock 8m W of cairn. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.
